Thanksgiving Traditions

My family hasn't always been huge on thanksgiving or any traditions surrounding this particular holiday.  While growing up, on Christmas, Easter, Valentines Day etc. we always had a tradition that I'd look forward to and it made each holiday that much more special. So for Vienna and our family I wanted to start a tradition of our own.

<PICTURE>

In the spirit of being thankful I wanted to do something that we as a family are accountable for letting each other know how much we love them and how thankful I am to have them specifically in my life. I've always thought it's sad that pen pals are so scarse and that not a lot of people actually write letters anymore, SO.. tratition one,

Thankful Letters

I'm now making it our tradition to write each other thankful letters each year on thanksgiving. I'll write one for Jon, Vienna and probably one for the little man currently renting space in my womb. And Jon will do the same. I'll probably let Vienna draw a picture for us and we can put the letters in our family memory box each year.

Boundaries With Your Infant

It's so much easier to set your boundaries before you need them.. but no one was there to tell me that.

Photo Jul 29, 6 55 00 PM.jpg

When your sole job as a parent is to meet the needs of your little one, and your child is an infant and can't communicate what they need or want it can become one of the hardest of guessing games. I remember Vienna being a little over a month old and one night, no matter what Jon and I did to console her she wouldn't stop crying. After what seemed like ten hours (and was probably more like two) she finally calmed down and we were able to get her and ourselves to bed.

At the time I was devastated. A complete mess. I couldn't understand why I, her mother, wasn't able to meet her needs. There must be some incompetency with my ability to be a mother because my child had been crying for two+ hours and wouldn't stop. I felt that devastation for days. Until I had a conversation with a friend. After our chat I was able to find comfort in the fact that I had done everything I could to make sure my child's needs were taken care of.

As adults have bad days or allow ourselves to be in a bad mood, and that's a choice we make (and a whole different post). Infants can go through that exact same thing. So from that day forward I set a boundary for myself. I made a list of what I think would be my child's basic & comfort needs. If Vienna were to get fussy I would go down my list and try to meet each need. But now, here's where it gets radical. IF I made it through my list and she was still fussy, I had done what I could as her mother to meet her needs, and I wasn't going to let that fact that Vienna was going through something affect me. Line. Drawn.

Now please don't get me wrong. I still felt bad for her and obviously wish that there was something I could do to help her. I would jump to meet that need if given the chance. BUT I was not going to put myself into a near mental break down because of it. I was not devastated. I was not a complete mess. I was not an incompetent mother. Boom. Boundary.

We are bombarded every day with outside words & thoughts telling us that we're not good enough. Becoming a parent just adds to that ten fold. If we're going to make it through this crazy decision we've made to be a parent, we have got to start taking care of ourselves, and I believe a huge part of that is having the ability to set boundaries.

I wanted to share my list of what I think are an infant’s basic & comfort needs. This obviously isn't the end all / be all of needs. I like to keep things broad and simple at the same time. But I would encourage any new parent to make their own list and draw their own line. There's no magic number of needs, write down two or write down twenty. As long as you've set your boundary you’re in control and you’re not allowing the possibility of those negative thoughts to take control of you.

Infant's Basic Needs & Comfort Needs

  • Hunger
  • Sleep
  • Diaper Chang
  • Too Hot or Cold
  • Under Stimulated (They could need a change of scenery, my daughter always loved going outside when she got fussy because there was so much to look at)
  • Over Stimulated (If there is too much going on they could just be overwhelmed and need less people, noise or light)

How I Became The Winemakers Wife

How did I become The Winemakers Wife?

In 2014, I got engaged. In 2015, I got married & had a baby. In two short years I went from being a single, work-a-holic to a married, wife & mom. You’d be hard pressed to find someone who handles that kind of identity change gracefully and without hardship. In the midst of my need to find myself in my new identity I was continually being called ‘The Winemkers Wife’. We would go into Wapato Point Cellars or Lake Chelan Winery (the wineries my husband makes wine at and co-owns) and I kept getting introduced as ‘The Winemakers Wife’. The first time I shrugged it off (I do have a name, but whatever!), the second time it was a little more off-putting, and every time after that I just giggled to myself. It sounds so glamorous, right! HA! ‘The Winemakers Wife’ .. if only they knew how un-glamorous it was. I decided to name my blog after these incidences because it’s kind of how I view myself and my life. Sure I can put on my face before I step out into the world, but I feel like my whole life has been just that. A face. A series of ‘if they only knew’.. If they only knew I got literally no sleep last night, no sleep. If they only knew I struggle with anxiety and am truly about to lose my shit right now. If they only knew my husband and I just screamed at each other the entire way to dinner, and now we have to smile and act all lovey. If they only knew. So yes, if you knew me prior to being Meagan Kludt, if you knew Meagan Wright, you probably have seen my blog and thought, OH GOD. How full of herself can she be?! Starting a blog called ‘The Winemakers Wife’ (insert eye roll here)! Hold up! I named it this because it makes me giggle! And sometimes, life gets too serious. And sometimes you just have to giggle at the people that call you The Winemakers Wife.

Life & Style | a GOLD Wedding Reception in Lake Chelan Wine Country

As per usual, Jon and I do things a little "different". Our wedding was no exception. We had a destination wedding in Kauai HI and held a wedding reception 7 months later in our home town, Lake Chelan WA.

Party planning and entertaining have always come natural to me. I'm bossy. I'm organized. And I love to make people happy. It would be an understatement to simply say I was excited to plan a party in celebration of my marriage in which I got to invite some of my and Jons closest friends and relatives.

I though, no big deal! I can do that all by myself. Now. Add in a newborn.

I had so many amazing plans. So many DIY crafts to make my reception utterly personal and ridiculously Pinterest worthy. Key word, HAD. I didn't have time for any of that once Vienna came! So .. Plan B. Call in the troops. Many of my girlfriends have gotten married in the past few years, all with AMAZING wedding decor. So what did I do? I borrowed.

I called Brittany Stansberry and used her wood planks as the base of my centerpieces. See her Wedding featured here on Green Wedding Shoes & Seattle Bride

I called Brittaney Johnson and used her large coffee cans spray painted gold, her large mason jars and her lanterns as our entry walk way decor.

I asked my sister to make some directional signs out of pallet wood.

I had some wine bottles, some spray painted gold and some glittered gold, from previous parties I had planned.

I went to Pier One and bought anything that was gold for my and Jon's dinner table settings.

One of my favorites was having games set up on the helicopter pad for everyone to enjoy! I tasked my dad with gathering the games  and setting them up. Jon and I even got to get a few minutes of fun in before walking into the reception.

The one thing I did end up doing at home (and cursing every minute of it) was rolling silverware with adorable Doyles and tiring them with jute rope. And folding napkins. They turned out adorable and was with the time.

At the end of the day it was easiest to accept the fact that I wasn't going to be able to do everything myself. When I finally put my stubbornness in my pocket and asked I realized how much I truly needed the help. But even more amazing was how willing people were to help out! It made my reception so much more fun and memorable having so many amazing people help me out. Each time I look at our reception photos I see so much of everyone else! I don't just see a beautiful centerpiece, a hand made sign or a Buffett of amazing food. I see each and every person that helped make that day a reality.

Cheers to all of you, the ones who came and drank with me, the ones that set up the day of, and the ones that contributed their personal items or personal time. Without you all it just would have been as unforgettable.

Here are a few of my favorites from the reception. These are my people. This is my happy.
